LQUOM Inc. (“LQUOM”), a Yokohama-based quantum technology company developing quantum repeater systems toward the realization of the quantum internet, has established LQUOM Denmark ApS, its first overseas subsidiary, in Copenhagen, Denmark, and opened its European operational base at Quantum Denmark.
LQUOM Denmark ApS was incorporated on July 3, 2026 as a wholly owned subsidiary of LQUOM. On September 10, LQUOM held an opening ceremony at Quantum Denmark, located within the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen.
The new base will serve as a platform for LQUOM’s business development, research and field demonstrations, engagement with European research and innovation programmes, recruitment of quantum technology talent, and international standardization activities in Europe.

Background
LQUOM is developing quantum repeaters and the technologies required for their implementation, including entangled-photon sources, quantum memories, wavelength conversion and frequency stabilization, with the goal of realizing the quantum internet.
In Japan, LQUOM has been advancing its technologies beyond laboratory research through field validation on commercial optical-fibre networks and joint research with telecommunications operators, technology companies and academic institutions, including projects related to quantum computer interconnection and long-distance quantum key distribution.
The development of practical quantum communication networks requires not only advances in laboratory technology, but also validation across different network environments, collaboration with network operators and research institutions, and international efforts toward interoperability and standardization.
Denmark combines world-class quantum research with a rapidly developing ecosystem for commercialisation and international collaboration. Against this background, LQUOM selected Copenhagen as the location of its first overseas subsidiary and its base for expanding activities across Europe.
Activities at Quantum Denmark
LQUOM Denmark ApS will operate from Quantum Denmark at the Niels Bohr Institute.
Quantum Denmark brings together quantum technology companies, researchers, investors and industry stakeholders with the objective of accelerating the transition of quantum technologies from research to commercial application.
Through its Copenhagen base, LQUOM intends to focus on:
• Field demonstrations and business development with European telecommunications and infrastructure operators
• Joint research and technology collaboration with European universities, research institutions and companies
• Exploring participation in European research and innovation programmes
• Strengthening international standardisation activities in quantum communication and quantum networking
• Recruiting R&D and business development talent in Europe
By bringing technologies and experience developed in Japan into European network environments, while transferring knowledge gained in Europe back into its activities in Japan, LQUOM aims to advance quantum networking technologies in both Japan and Europe.
Field Demonstration in Denmark
As its first field demonstration in Denmark, LQUOM is planning to validate quantum communication technologies using the fibre network of GlobalConnect A/S (“GlobalConnect”), a major digital infrastructure provider in Northern Europe. The demonstration is expected to use LQUOM’s entangled-photon source and related technologies to evaluate their performance and operational stability in a telecommunications-carrier environment.
The project is also expected to be supported through an overseas demonstration programme of Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, providing an opportunity to validate quantum communication technologies developed in Japan under European network conditions.
Comment from Kazuya Niizeki, CEO of LQUOM
“Realizing the quantum internet as practical infrastructure requires more than completing technologies inside the laboratory. We need to validate them on real telecommunications networks and build the future network together with researchers, operators and companies around the world.
Denmark has not only played a central role in the history of quantum science, but today is also home to one of the world’s most active quantum research and innovation ecosystems. We are very pleased to establish LQUOM’s first overseas base at the heart of this ecosystem at Quantum Denmark.
By bringing the quantum repeater technologies we have developed in Japan into European network environments, while bringing the knowledge and experience gained here back to Japan, we aim to accelerate the development of quantum networks that connect across borders.”
